Westminster isn't interested in tackling soaring food prices, SNP warn

The SNP has said the UK Government "aren't interested in tackling soaring food prices" - following new analysis showing popular family meals have risen by 27% over the last year.

Figures from Which? found the price of basic ingredients for a pasta dish had jumped from £2.68 in the three months to the end of last May to £3.39 during the same period this year - an increase of 27%.

David Linden MP, the SNP's Social Justice spokesperson, has urged the UK Government to learn from its European neighbours Ireland and France, who reached agreements with major supermarket retailers to reduce food prices.

Commenting, David Linden MP said:

"As the Westminster-made cost of living crisis continues to spiral out of control, it would seem the UK Government aren't interested in tackling soaring food prices.

"In contrast, the Irish and French governments have worked constructively with major retailers to reduce food prices, while the Tories sit on their hands and refuse to act.

"It's high time the Prime Minister listens to the concerns of ordinary, working-class people who are struggling to put food on the table, follow in the footsteps of our French and Irish neighbours, and reach an agreement with retailers which will help families.

"However, for as long as the Tories and pro-Brexit Labour remain wedged to their destructive Brexit ideology, Scotland's economy will continue to suffer.

"Only the SNP are offering voters a real alternative through independence - and a return to the world's largest single market."
