The Chancellor is being challenged to explain why he failed to act to help households with rising energy bills in his autumn statement, after news broke that they are to rise further still at the beginning of 2024.
The unwelcome start to the new year was announced today by energy regulator Ofgem, and represents a 5% increase to the price cap. Households are expected to pay £1,928 a year on average for their gas and electricity.
Ahead of the Chancellor's autumn statement yesterday, the SNP repeatedly challenged the British Government to introduce a £400 energy bill rebate for households in order to help ensure families were not left cold over the winter.
With energy bills around double what they were in 2021 and mortgages, rents and food bills soaring, the Chancellor failed to deliver measures to give people immediate help.
❌ This UK Tory budget has failed on every measure and exposed that Scotland is suffering a cost of Westminster crisis.

As millions of people see their incomes hammered as a result of Tory cuts, Brexit and UK government incompetence, Westminster's failure to act is leaving many families struggling to make ends meet.
Westminster's total power failure shows why Scotland needs the full powers of independence so we can grow our economy, boost incomes, and create a fairer society.
