16 days of activism: Dogs Trust Freedom Project

It is day 10 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and I want to highlight the work of the Freedom Project, which is run by the Dogs Trust.

Although it doesn't run directly from the rehoming centre in Broomhouse in my constitency, I've paid a visit there and recorded a short video to raise awareness and support.

The Freedom Project is an important part of the work that the Dogs Trust do across Scotland.

This very specialist service supports those fleeing domestic abuse through offering free and confidential foster care for their dog.

For many, this makes it possible to move into temporary housing safe in the knowledge that their dog is being loved and cared for.

Since it launched in 2004, the Freedom Project has fostered over 2000 dogs and removed barriers for thousands of women to escape abuse.

All of this has been made possible by a dedicated support team at Dogs Trust and many wonderful volunteers.

Sadly, more foster carers are urgently needed due to a rise in demand for the service this year.

If you think that you could help look after a dog and would like to become a foster carer, you can find out more information and apply at dogtrustfreedomproject.org.uk.

And if you need to use the service to have your dog cared for while you escape abuse, visit the website or call the Scottish team 0808 169 4315.

Your call will be treated confidentially and you will be offered expert advice and support.

The Freedom Project is just one example of a lifeline service that is making a difference each and every day.

Fleeing abuse is often difficult and complicated but thanks to the Dogs Trust, there are women who are able to do so every day with one less obstacle to overcome.
