For day 12 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, I've published a thread of 16 tweets about the campaign, the issues, and how to get involved.
Getting the message out there is a form of activism. Please help by sharing it online.

16 tweets to explain the #16Days of activism.
The campaign runs until this Saturday, International Human Rights Day – a recognition that violence against women and girls is the most pervasive breach of human rights worldwide. pic.twitter.com/rFbxkLcPyI
✊ The campaign was originated by activists at the inaugural Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991. It is used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

The #16Days of activism are a chance to:
— David Linden MP (@DavidLinden) December 6, 2022
👉Invite everyone to take action
👉Amplify the voices of feminist women’s movements across the world
👉Make space for anyone to express their support and solidarity
🦠The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified violence against women and girls, reversing decades of progress on women’s labour force participation, raised the number of women living in extreme poverty and increased the burden of unpaid care and domestic work.

Since the pandemic began:

➡️ 45% of women reported that they or a woman they know has experienced violence against women.
➡️ 7 in 10 women think verbal or physical abuse by a partner has become more common.
➡️ 6 in 10 felt sexual harassment in public spaces has worsened.
Violence against women and girls is estimated to affect more than 1 in 3 women, a figure that has remain largely unchanged over the last decade. pic.twitter.com/46PE1e6pT1

In the UK, over 70% of women in the UK say they have experienced sexual harassment in a public space. The UN found that only 3% of women aged 18-24 said they had not experienced any sexual harassment behaviours.

However, it is clear this is a global issue – with almost 9 in 10 women in some cities around the world feel unsafe in public spaces. pic.twitter.com/fmZImGEi4Z

It is clear that the systems in place to reduce violence and harassment are not working. Only 4% of women told the UN that they reported the incidents of harassment to an official organisation – with 45% of women saying they didn’t believe reporting would help change anything.

Despite these worrying trends women’s rights organisations and autonomous feminist movements remain severely underfunded – studies show that only 1% of gender focused aid from governments goes to autonomous women’s organisations. pic.twitter.com/iQ0Y3KZ2Es

Despite the pandemic moving things back, supporting and investing in strong, autonomous women’s rights organisations and feminist movements is key to ending violence against women and girls. That's why this year's message is to #PushForward. pic.twitter.com/miIuVuJN3b

Much stronger protection mechanisms are needed to prevent and eliminate violence, harassment, threats, intimidation and discrimination against women human rights defenders, women’s rights advocates and activists. pic.twitter.com/FhzK7CP4Lr

Activism and work to end gender-based violence does not end on Saturday. But the #16Days campaign provides an excellent opportunity to raise these issues to the forefront and to have more people become active to eliminate violence against women and girls.
