Neonatal leave campaign leaps forward with Bill

If you have followed my work as an MP, you'll know that I've long championed a campaign to provide the parents of premature and sick babies with extra paid time off work while their child is receiving care on a neonatal unit.

I'm absolutely delighted that campaign took a massive leap towards reality yesterday when my colleague Stuart McDonald MP introduced the Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Bill into the House of Commons.

Although it is quite difficult to introduce and pass legislation as an individual Member of Parliament, Stuart is taking full advantage of having been drawn first in the Private Member's Bill ballot, which guarantees him sufficient parliamentary time to try to get his legislation through.

It is vital that this Bill now becomes a law so that tens of thousands of families each year will get a little bit of extra support when they need it most.

For an idea of why this legislation is so important, watch this piece from yesterday's Reporting Scotland evening news.
