Dogs Trust food bank supports pet owners during cost-of-living crisis

I recently paid a visit to the new pet food bank set up at the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Broomhouse, set up in response to the growing cost-of-living crisis.

Dogs Trust received a record number of handover enquiries last year from desperate dog owners being forced to make the heart-breaking decision to give up their pets. Around a quarter of those calling cited the rise in the cost of living as a reason for needing to hand over their dogs.

A recent survey for the charity found that 84% of dog owners had seen a rise in the cost of looking after their dog, and three quarters (77%) had seen a rise in the cost of dog food.

It saddens me to hear of so many families forced to give up their beloved pets because they cannot afford to meet the costs involved in looking after them. But I'm really impressed by the work being done at the centre which will go a long way to supporting more dogs to stay in loving homes with families who care for them.

The pet food bank is open daily between 8am and 4.30pm; for more information or to donate items, call 0303 003 0000.
