Cranhill Post Office closure: UK Government fails to act

Post Office Limited has announced that Cranhill Post Office will be closing on Tuesday 23 February 2021.

Just a fortnight after learning of the imminent closure of Garthamlock Post Office, Glasgow East has been devastated once again.

Once again, this highlights the major problems that exist with the sustainability of the Post Office network. Cranhill is going to suffer the consequences of inaction.

Because of coronavirus, people are trying to do the right thing and stay as local as possible. Between the bank branch closures that have devastated local high streets in recent years and Post Office branches shutting their doors, people are being forced to travel much greater distances to lodge a cheque or post a parcel.

I’ve been calling for action from the UK Government for years now. The current business model of Post Office Ltd is clearly unsustainable and is failing our communities. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has responsibility over this yet has repeatedly failed to take the matter seriously.

We need proper solutions to the devastation of our post office network and I'll keep the pressure on the Government.

Post Office Ltd is currently holding a consultation on this branch closure. If you are affected, please let them know your thoughts by email to comments@postoffice.co.uk
